Tips for Parents

My goal: Help YOUR child expand on the skills he or she learned in earlier levels of Spanish and learn the skills needed to SPEAK, READ, WRITE, and UNDERSTAND Spanish.

It is my personal goal that my students never say the following: “I took 4 years of Spanish in high school and can’t speak a word.”

Here are some ways that you can help your child be successful in Spanish class this year:

    • Help your child be organized.  Every student needs a binder at least one inch thick. This will replace their textbook and should be neat and organized. Ask to see it! Check if it looks neat and if it is well-stocked!
    • Ask about homework assignments.  Your child has homework about twice a week in Spanish class. Some weeks may be more homework-heavy than others. Assignments will be posted on Google Classroom.  A link to each class's Google Classroom page is on the home page of this site.
    • Study with your child.  Parents can help with vocabulary and verb forms. Flashcards make this form of studying possible even if you don’t speak Spanish! You can also quiz them over words and phrases from their notes.  Vocabulary is available on Quizlet, and there are links to the Quizlet vocabulary sets on the Classroom Resources page.
    • Find out what your child did in class today.  Ask your child to tell you/show you/teach you what was learned in class today. If s/he can explain it, s/he understands it! (and you get to learn some Spanish for free!)
    • Monitor your child’s grade and homework completion.  All of your student’s grades are posted on PowerSchool within a week from the due date for smaller assignments, within a month for larger assignments.
    • Encourage your child to attend conference periods when needed.  I have two periods available to meet. I am also available before or after school.  Support your child in coming to school and being alert and attentive EVERY DAY.

Learning Spanish is a sequential process, more like Math than English, and what they learn now, they need all year. If they don’t do well on Chapter 2, learning Chapter 3 material will be extremely difficult. This is their crucial foundation. Please support them in building a strong one! Likewise, if your student did not understand a concept from a previous year of Spanish, this year may be difficult. There are free online websites to help. Please ask if your student needs help with a specific topic.

Please email or call me any time for anything. I welcome your involvement!
